The Case for College Admissions Consulting As college admission consultants, we are aware of the negative labels attached to our profession. In a field occasionally described as exorbitant, unregulated, and even predatory, we work hard to demonstrate the value of our service, as well as our commitment to the students we guide. Although the rapid  rise  of the admissions consulting industry should suggest that we serve a purpose, others argue that private college counselors have simply become the latest â€Å"status good†Ã¢â‚¬â€another unnecessary marker of privilege.   While admission consultants are indeed more likely to work with an affluent demographic, their function should not be confused with that of a diamond ring or luxury car.College is a significant investment. Students commit as much as $200,000 (not including foregone earnings) toward an experience that has the potential to shape their personal and professional lives, and yet few choose to, or are able to, seek the advice of a college planning expert . Even in the wealthiest communities, high schools, and school counselors in particular, are increasingly unable to devote sufficient time to college planning—the average counselor is responsible for approximately 500 students, while the average student receives only 38 minutes of college-related advice during their high school career.The need for greater college guidance is clear, but not every family needs outside assistance.   For example, students attending high schools where counselors are competent, accessible (e.g., responsible for about 100 students or less) and primarily devoted to college planning may not require additional help.   However, if you attend a high school where college-related support is lacking, you may benefit from private guidance, particularly in these cases:You want to attend a selective college.  At College Transitions, we emphasize fit over prestige and stress the importance of â€Å"big-picture† thinking; but for many of our student s, their â€Å"best-fit† colleges are also the most prestigious. Ideally, a college admissions consultant works to identify and cultivate the best of what a student has to offer—through course selection, career/interests assessment, activities planning, college essay coaching and other things that improve his or her prospects for college admission  and  personal fulfillment.   Unfortunately, these services are rarely provided in our high schools, and not even discussed until junior or senior year, when it is often too late to develop a consistent and coherent record of accomplishment.You want to save money.   Despite the significant costs associated with private college guidance, a college admissions consultant should ultimately  reduce  your college-related spending—for example, by pointing you to good-fit colleges that are (relatively) inexpensive and where you are likely to receive significant (need-based and/or  merit-based) financial aid. Our consultants, in particular, also teach students/families how to maximize their financial aid  eligibility, complete financial aid forms, locate suitable scholarship opportunities, shorten their time to degree (e.g., through early college learning, advice on navigating general education requir ements, etc.), and identify majors and careers that pave the way for professional fit and success.   Any admissions consultant worth his/her salt will help families realize college-related returns that dwarf any amount of money put toward private college planning.You are a non-traditional college applicant.  Ã‚  Due to their location, learning styles, and/or learning preferences, many students are without access to a school counselor who can accommodate their unique circumstances and guide them into good-fit institutions. For example, homeschooled students and virtual schooled students rarely benefit from the advice of a school-based college planner, despite facing additional and different hurdles/requirements in the college application process. International students may have access to a school counselor, but one that is not adequately familiar with U.S. higher education. Finally, students with learning disabilities rarely have access to a school professional who can identify t he colleges and college support services that are likely to facilitate their postsecondary success.   In contrast, college admission consultants, as a result of their training and focus, should have knowledge and skills that enable them to address the unique college-related needs of each population.Ultimately, if you fall into one or more of the above three categories, you might consider hiring a college admissions consultant. But how do you go about finding the  right  consultant? Affiliation with a professional organization—such as the National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC) or the Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA)—suggests adherence to an important set of professional and ethical standards; however, requirements for entry are relatively lax and membership in either does not indicate competence.   Therefore, it is important to do your own research.   Inquire about the consultant’s background and experienceà ¢â‚¬â€have they worked as a college admissions officer and/or school counselor? Do they have licensure in a counseling-related profession? How long have they been practicing? Additionally, ask to see written material that reflects both their knowledge and perspective (blogs, publications, etc.). Ask for references. And finally, inquire about costs.Admittedly, admissions consulting can be expensive, for two particular reasons: (1) effectively guiding students through the college admissions and financial aid process requires many hours of work (it’s not uncommon for us to devote 40-50 hours to our students); and (2) demand for admissions consulting is high.   At College Transitions, counselors limit their practice to 30 students per grade level, despite the fact that we receive far more requests, and because taking on additional students would compromise the quality and responsiveness of our service. Therefore, we set price points that enable us to balance the demand for our services with our capacity to serve.   We also offer multiple plans, which allows us to reach more students and accommodate families that cannot afford our most comprehensive package.   Currently, our prices range from $500 to $4000, but rates can and often do change, especially later in the admissions cycle, when demand is particularly strong.   Cost-conscious families who desire private guidance are advised to inquire about payment plans and commit to services earlier in the year before â€Å"admissions season† begins.   All families are urged to avoid counselors charging in the neighborhood of $10,000 or more—not because such counselors are incompetent or untrustworthy, but because  any  student in  any  circumstance can find an equally effective counselor charging far less.Some final thoughts about access and affordability: Private counselors are often criticized as giving an unfair advantage to wealthier applicants.   This argument holds some tr uth—we mostly offer services to people who can afford them—but similar arguments can be made about other professionals who also seek to do well by doing good, including doctors, lawyers, personal trainers, etc. Moreover, many admissions consultants, including us, devote a substantial amount of time to pro-bono work and regularly disseminate free advice through writing and/or presentations. Ultimately, many of us pursue private consulting because we like helping people—rich, poor, and anyone in between. We believe in the value of early planning, and we know that comprehensive college guidance can help students avoid the  academic pitfalls  and  professional dissatisfaction  that so many others experience. Ideally, we help students realize their best selves, and in doing so, provide a service far more important than anything you can park in your driveway or put around your finger.

That is what brought on the denial of her father’s death. That denial also plays a role in her necrophilia problem later in the story. The first of Miss Emily’s problem is denial. In a couple of cases we see that her denial is a big problem for her. We first see her denial take place when she takes place when the narrator talks about how she avoided paying taxes. This seems minor at this point because the town had told her that she owed no taxes, and in fact that the city owed her money from her fathers loan to the town. The loan was false but when her father passed she was left with only a house. Since she was thought of by the town as â€Å" a tradition, a duty and a care† (pg. 148). the town decided to help her out. They didn’t think she would take charity money so they made up the lie. When the younger people started taking over the town they sent her a letter to pay her taxes. She insisted that she owed nothing to the town. The leaders of the town sent a couple of letters to her but got no return. Back and forth it went until they decided to go to her house and collect the money. After a brief discussion she forced them out of her home with out paying and telling them to talk to Colonel Sartoris because she has no taxes in Jefferson. Colonel Sartoris had died by this point but she was unaware because she wouldn’t leave her home. We see her deal with denial when the death of her father comes. The day after he died a group of ladies went up to the house to â€Å"offer condolences and aid† (pg. 151) and Miss Emily â€Å"met them at the door, dressed as usual and with no trace of grief on her face. † (pg. 51) She denied that her father was dead. For 3 days people went to her house trying to get her to let them dispose of the body. And right as they were about to use law and force she allowed them to take the body and burry him. This is when we first signs that she was gong crazy. However, the narrator does say that they didn’t think she was crazy at thi s point but â€Å"she had to do that. † (pg. 151) The third denial she faces is when she murdered Homer Barron. Her and Homer were seen together on several occasions out in town. Many people thought they would marry but then Homer was last seen entering her home. The people of Jefferson thought he had left town after that since he was never seen again. At the end we learn that she had killed him. His body was lying in an upstairs room. The room was set up almost like that of a room for a bridal. Although filled with dust, the narrator describes a room that at one time was decorated. Homer’s body was decayed and only the bones were left. There was evidence that she would lay beside him at night. She killed him because she was fearful of abandonment. In a way I think she thought she would always have him by killing him then leaving his body up stairs so she could lay with him until she died. We can look at how she treated death of her father and Homer as denial but it can also be looked at, as she feared abandonment as well. Growing up her father was very strict with her. She wasn’t allowed to date any man. Her father was extremely controlling over almost every part of her life. So when her father passed she didn’t want to admit it to herself because he was all she had as for as close family goes. I think she needed that controlling figure in her life. It’s obvious that she liked Homer and maybe she was scared he would leave her so she killed him. By doing that she would have him forever. Her love for Homer may have come due to the fact that she was like her dad. Even though her dad was controlling of her she had loved him dearly. Within this group, helium is the least reactive element, forming no stable compounds.Metal can have multiple oxidation states and tend to have intermediate reactivity. Metals with low reactivity are called noble metals.  The least reactive metal is platinum, followed by gold. Because of their low reactivity, these metals dont readily dissolve in strong acids. Aqua regia, a mixture of nitric acid and hydrochloric acid, is used to dissolve platinum and gold. How Reactivity Works A substance reacts when the products formed from a chemical reaction have lower energy (higher stability) than the reactants. The energy difference can be predicted using valence bond theory, atomic orbital theory, and molecular orbital theory. Basically, it boils down to the stability of electrons in their orbitals. Unpaired electrons with no electrons in comparable orbitals are the most likely to interact with orbitals from other atoms, forming chemical bonds. Unpaired electrons with degenerate orbitals that are half-filled are more stable but still reactive. The least reactive atoms are those with a filled set of orbitals (octet). The stability of the electrons in atoms determines not only the reactivity of an atom but its valence and the type of chemical bonds it can form. For example, carbon usually has a valence of 4 and forms 4 bonds because its ground state valence electron configuration is half-filled at  2s2  2p2. A simple explanation of reactivity is that it increases with the ease of accepting or donating an electron. In the case of carbon, an atom can either accept 4 electrons to fill its orbital or (less often) donate the four outer electrons. While the model is based on atomic behavior, the same principle applies to ions and compounds. Reactivity is affected by the physical properties of a sample, its chemical purity, and the presence of other substances. In other words, reactivity depends on the context in which a substance is viewed. For example, baking soda and water are not particularly reactive, while baking soda and vinegar readily react to form carbon dioxide gas and sodium acetate. Particle size affects reactivity. For example, a pile of corn starch is relatively inert. If one applies a direct flame to the starch, its difficult to initiate a combustion reaction. However, if the corn starch is vaporized to make a cloud of particles, it readily ignites. Sometimes the term reactivity  is also used to describe how quickly a material will react or the rate of the chemical reaction. Under this definition the chance of reacting and the speed of the reaction are related to each other by the rate law: Rate k[A] Where rate is the change in molar concentration per second in the rate-determining step of the reaction, k is the reaction constant (independent of concentration), and [A] is the product of the molar concentration of the reactants raised to the reaction order (which is one, in the basic equation). According to the equation, the higher the reactivity of the compound, the higher its value for k and rate. Stability Versus Reactivity Sometimes a species with low reactivity is called stable, but care should be taken to make the context clear. Stability can also refer to slow radioactive decay or to the transition of electrons from the excited state  to less energetic levels (as in luminescence). A nonreactive species may be called inert. However, most inert species actually do react under the right conditions to form complexes and compounds (e.g., higher atomic number noble gases).
